Let's talk about one question with transformative potential: Where is my focus directed— inwardly or outwardly? Or more plainly, Is it about me or is it about others?
The direction of our focus is a powerful force that can shape our courage, happiness, and the impact we have on the world. It's a factor that I've found to be critical in driving satisfaction in life.
My most miserable moments are when it’s all about me. When we make it all about us, we become the ultimate consumer. And, there’s a saturation point where no matter what or how much we consume, we’re not satisfied.
The purpose for regularly asking ourselves this question is about observing where our attention is directed, then making a conscious choice to redirect it, when needed. Making the choice to redirect from ourselves to others, to show up with our gifts and serve, can play a significant role in shaping our lives— and others.
The Impact of Focus on Courage and Risk-Taking
When we focus on ourselves, our world often becomes limited to our comfort zones. This inward focus can restrict our courage and discourage us from taking risks. On the flip side, shifting our attention towards others can embolden us. It encourages us to step outside our comfort zones, take risks, and embrace the opportunities that come our way.
The Role of Focus in Happiness
Our focus also has a profound effect on our happiness. When we're self-absorbed, our joy is often tied to whether or not we're meeting our own expectations. This reliance can lead to constant dissatisfaction. However, when we focus on others, we discover a different kind of happiness—the joy of giving. It allows us to find joy in using our unique gifts to serve others.
Focus and the Impact We Make
Lastly, the direction of our focus can determine the impact we make on the world. A self-focused perspective might lead us to prioritize personal gain, sometimes at the expense of others. But focusing on others, showing up with our unique gifts, allows us to make a positive, lasting impact that extends beyond our personal sphere.
So, ask yourself: Is it about me or is it about others? Remember, shifting our focus from self to others can bring about a significant transformation. It can enhance our courage, increase our happiness, and magnify our impact on the world. It's a perspective shift that can not only change our lives but also influence the lives of those around us.
